FAQ

Do we have to fill out an application to play in Esterwell?

Most characters in Esterwell do not need an application to play here, however there are some exceptions to that rule, anyone playing a minor for instance can find the minor application here and there may also be a character sheet that is introduced for V:tM vampires as well.

What sorts of weapons are allowed in Esterwell?

Essentially the weapons in Esterwell go along with what you would usually see readily available in real life. Handguns and shot guns small knives and edged weapons along with bashing weapons like baseball bats pipes and other things of the sort. All edged weapons and handguns will need to be registered with a concealed carry permit at the police station and in character no weapons are allowed on the school grounds at any time. If you choose to bring them there you will likely have to face expulsion (if you are a student) or being fired (if you are a teacher) if you are caught.

If you are caught using a weapon in public however by the police, and do not have a Concealed Carry Permitt then you may face IC consequences for you actions.

Also there are certain areas that do not allow weapons In character, like the school or the hospital or the police station. If you bring a weapon into any of those facilities you may find yourself facing extreme IC consequences and keep in mind that there /are/ NPCs and security Cameras that will enforce this in some places.

If you run a business that has a high tech security system you must play installing it in character and create a notecard that outlines what a player may find. Keep in mind secutity measures cannot exceed what is available today.

For those of you wanting to play futuristic characters any weapons you may have from a future reality will die after three charges as the power sources are limited though unlike with magic they cannot be charged again through glamor.

Are we allowed to play Cyborgs or Ai's here?

Yes, but they are considered supernatural characters and subject to the same rules as the rest. This means that they will need to find a source of energy to continue at full power and anytime anything that goes beyond the limits of a normal human is used to affect another character or the environment they weaken. So they can also only perform three supernatural feats a day. They can only have two traits visible at any time, and they must also follow a masquerade because hunters will be interested in their technology.

How does Glamour work in terms of masking our character's traits?

A Glamour is like the ultimate costume, once you put it on it literally bends reality around you making it seem like you've changed entirely into something else. So if someone touches you they will not be able to feel the difference, and you can wear clothes naturally. There are however some details that will always be based on how you wish to play your character. Things you will want to think about: Are they very skilled in Glamour? Will it hide their scent and smell, if that is unique? What will happen if their blood is studied under a microscope?

How will drugs affect my character?

Illegal and prescription drugs often have a different effect on human and supernaturals in terms of Creativity/Banality or obtaining Glamour/Magical energy. If you are curious how these things might affect your character please click here. Keep in mind not every character will be effected exactly the same, and that this is just a general list that you can choose to play on if you like.

How do NPCs work in esterwell?

Sometimes NPCs are immportant fill in for some stories, and interacting witht hem at times can make the town fill bigger more populated as it would realistically be, and here on esterwell that is essentially their purpose. Occassionally you will have NPCs that are personal body guards or made to react to combat situations in order to help you fill out your factions, and for them the rules are simple:

Any one player can have only up to two active combat NPCs at the same time and these NPCs must be weaker or at the same level as the person or people you are fighting against. For example: If you are fighting smeone who is unarmed your NPC must also be unarmed or If they are not wearing armor your personal NPCs cannot be wearing armor unless you are in your factions headquarters and these traits are specified on the business forum page or on a readily available notecard in world.

At a Faction headquarters there can be up to but nor more than five active combat NPCs at any given time. That means you can assume that when you enter a business or a faction headquarters it is not unguarded, and because of these NPCs there will be consequences for your actions.

Treat NPCs like other players in terms of godmodding, powergaming, or metagaming. This means just like a player a combat NPC will get their own post in the post order and they cannot be controled by another player. It is up to the player who created them to keep track of or control the NPC. Non-combative NPCs however can be interacted with if none of the faction members are around to play them.

Noncombative business NPC's can not be killed without the player's knowledge or permission. This means that you cannot walk in and kill a player or businesses NPCs when they are not around to play them.

Do I have I Have to Have two visible Traits for my Supernatural Character?

No, whether or not you have any traits showing at all is completely up to you and when you show them is up to you, the rule of thumb is simply that you can have /up to/ two traits showing at anygiven time on the SIM. The Jasper national Forest area however is a place that one might consider revealing their true selves more completely Provided the height of your supernatural avatar does not exceede the mouth of the caves.

Do I need a special role/group tag/group to run events?

Not at all, when you join the Esterwell RP group as a player you are automatically given the right to make IC notices about IC events that you will be hosting. Anyone can do it if they have a reason to and if they have a space, or if you don't have suitable space yourself you can always talk to the proprieter of a space ICly and get permission to hold an event there. This means that if you talk to the owner of the hotel for instance about running an event there and they agree in character then you can hold your event, market it through the group or on the forum and inspire people to come out.

The RP group can also be used for when you character enters the SIM, when your character does something interesting you really want to share, to bring RP to a certain area, to write a continuing story with other people on the SIM, or to control an NPC in your business. In Esterwell you are always responsible for you own RP and we encourage you to take inititative and write your story in whatever way we can.

Why does Esterwell allow child avatars?

One of the things that we are going for in Esterwell is  realism but also an open forum in creativity. Limiting characters and their stories assuming things about the person based on what they play and discriminating against a group of players based on unfounded fact and assumption is not something we will ever do and is not something we are comfortable with as those sorts of traps and ideas are the things that most limit ones ability to remain openminded and creative. When we created Esterwell we created a setting for people to come and play in and bring their stories and our purpose as admins is not to force our ideas on our players or control what they are and what they do in Esterwell, our purpose is simply to make sure that characters fit the setting and that no one is breaking the ToS. Children do not break the setting of Esterwell, in fact, they add to it.

Are there designated areas for children in Esterwell?

The answer to that question is no, there is not one specific area that the children have to play in. There are however places on SIM that children are not allowed, such as bars, clubs and the resort Spa area. Just as in real life however they can and will try to sneak in using fake ids or whatever other means they can find, so be on your guard. No one wants their liquor liscense revoked after all. That being sai the Liquid Lounge is an 18 and over club space.

Are all Academy Students considered Children?

Absolutely not. Many of the Academy of highschool aged students are 18 and are considered adults. That means they can engage in adult activity without it being considered age play. If a person is playing a Minor they will have a tag above their head that /clearly/ states that they are a minor avatar, their character name and their age. Also minors are screened and we do know the moment they come in what age they are playing so if there is a child or minor on SIM without a titler we can speak to them directly if they attempt to enter an adult space or if they are engaged in activities that go against the ToS.

Are sex or other adult story lines allowed on this SIM?

Yes! This is a moderate rated SIM so sex is allowed and adult story lines are allowed. If there is a child avatar nearby when something like that is going on it is up to them to move to a different area, not up to the adult to stop their scene. That being said use a level of decorum, don't go into the middle of the park if you see a bunch of children and start doing ault things just to break up their RP. Don't grief with it, be respectful. It is also important to not that everyone on this SIM is over 18 behind the avatar and everyone on this SIM is actually an adult. If I child avatar sees something by accident it is not going to scar them for life. Most of them have kids of their own in real life, and families and job and all of them are mature adults chosing to play a story from the perspective of a child.

What can't we do with children?

You cannot play sex with a minor avatar. Ever. Keep in mind a child is anyone Wearing a titler on our SIM that clearly states they are a minor, their name and age. Anyone playing a character under the age of 18 IS considered a minor and MUST wear the titler at all times while on SIM.

What Can Minors Do?

Minors 16 and over can deal drugs, takes drugs, get into trouble be violent interact with anyone on SIM, buy and sell fake I.Ds and pretty much anything /but/ sex. That being said a minor 16 and over can play a teen pregnancy or can ellude to something happening with another person, it simply can't be played out. Minors 15 and under should not engage in combat, and if they do try to use fake ids to sneak into places it will be very obvious to everyone they are under aged so they cannot enter bars and clubs without being caught right away.

How many Rentals Can one Person have on SIM?

In order to keep things fair and involve as many people in the storyline as possible, we are alowing each person to indivudually own one house or residence, one business, one office and one drivers liscense if they need it for extra prims to keep their vehicles rezzed in designated parking areas. If you have two people on one rental it counts towards one persons count. So two people on the same rentals can own two residences two businesses two offices and two driveres lisceses. They may not however own four businesses or four residences. Ocassionally the offices and the businesses can be combined if you wish to have your character own a larger company and not one of the businesses in town. For more information on that please speak to Sariayna Yuhara in world.
