The Supernaturals

 

Other Worlds

Supernatural creatures are defined as creatures of a magical or mythical nature that are not inherently native to this world/reality. They are also a vivid and important part of the story of Esterwell but come with a specific challenge; Not many can fully see what they are and when they come across someone who can easily see what few traits they have left themselves, it can often times lead them into a dangerous situation.

 

There is no limit on Esterwell as to what sorts of creatures you can play or what sort of worlds they might come from. We have left it open to you to create the back story of your character and to define what they are and how and why they have found their way into the mortal world. There are however a few things that are the same across the board.

 

Physical Appearance

Because most supernaturals are not used to the world they live in and the bodies they have created for themselves, sometimes a couple of traits show through. Like wings perhaps on a fae, strange colored eyes, or little tails and pointed ears and their faces and bodies often tend to match what they are. For instance a wolfman might be tall and muscular, with strong hard features and lots of hair. While a little pixie might be short and waif like in her human form.

 

Keep in mind that as far as original traits go they are limited to two minor ones. Wings and ears for example or tails and oddly colored eyes. Even though many people won't be able to see them there are always those that can, and because of how some of the natives might react it is important to maintain a masquerade as much as possible. Even humans that are inherently magical themselves may not be able to understand after all, and that can lead to a great deal of danger.

 

Magic and Glamour

Unlike most worlds magic in this place is not as overly abundant in the land itself. For some reason supernatural creatures find it difficult to connect directly with the earth itself so most of their magical energy must be fueled by the intelligent life that occupies Esterwell, by either drawing glamour or in some cases drawing blood.

 

Glamour is essentially the essence of magical energy, and it can be found in those humans that possess an incredibly creative spirit or outlook on life. The artists and the dreamers often prove to be the best places to find the resources to replenish oneself, particularly when they are involved in an act of creative expression. A touch, or a hug, or sometimes a kiss and leave a supernatural that needs that sort of energy to survive well replenished, though by the same turn there are also the others. The dangerous ones whose imagination is closed to logic and their understanding of the world is wholly limited by what they think they know and the potent intensity of their beliefs. These humans can make a magical creature feel unwell of off balance just by being near, and a touch from them could be devastating. Young children can also pose as a good source of power as they, under normal circumstances, have not yet learned how limit their imaginations.

 

Because the sources of magic here are so limited and the energy that sustains most magical creatures is not freely available the amount of power one can use on a given day must be carefully measured. While one spell can leave a magical being feeling depleted, two or three in a single day could leave them totally incapacitated, particularly if it is being used to effect the environment around them or another person or creature. Some might find that if they tempt fate to strongly they will up in the caring or uncaring hands of the hospital staff before they are aware enough to even protest.

 

Dreams

There are some supernatural creatures in this world that have learned how to harness the power of dreams. And it is common knowledge that often times when a human is asleep they are at their most creative. While it takes a great deal of power to influence a dream, there have some that have come to understand that it does not take very much to visit, but when they do their presence is sometimes enough to inspire the dreamer to create dreams worlds that are far more potent and far richer then what they might experience otherwise.

 

The touch of a light presence for instance could inspire them to dream up glorious dreamscapes that feel more real and life like than what they otherwise might see on their own. These dreams can be good and inspire great works of art or moment of creativity in the waking world and leave the dream in a happy relaxed state when they climb out of bed.

 

While on the other spectrum of things a dark presence can influence or inspire the dream to fall into the monstrous nightmare pit in their psyche, where every dark thing there seems more real, more vibrant and far far more deadly. These dreams can also inspire creativity in their own right, but unlike the beautiful dream landscapes their counterparts help inspire these are the darker more emotionally edged sort of works of art, as destructive in a way as they are beautiful. A dreamer with such inspiration might wake up overcome with emotion and driven to find some sort of outlet.

 

Hybrids

While there are some instances of hybrids or creatures of mixed bloodlines visiting, for the most part a creature will take whatever dominant genetics their supernatural parents had, either right away or when they come of age at 21. Still there are though whose genes have been split right down the middle, between two equally potent races. While it can be possible at times to run into such creatures, it is not possible for dominant magical genes to split themselves three or more ways. Which means each magical character can only have two intermingling bloodlines at any given time.

 

Tinies

The one exception to the two traits rule are the tinies of esterwell. sometimes winged somtimes not these tiny little creatures are known to slip in and out of veiw of the most creative natives. Most tiny supernaturals are often very limited in their capacity to feel multiple emotions at once, and therefore find it far more difficult to hold onto glamour than their taller more human like counter parts. Usually they simply appear as invisible to most natives save the ones who are creative enough to see past what is usual and into the world of possibility. Tinies can appear as winged creatures, little people or very small  animal like people that often exist to create mischief or perform tasks of great selflessness to those humans that are deserving. Young children who have not yet lost the ability to fully immerse themselves in their imagination often see them easily and can be as fascinated by these tiny little beings as the little beaings are by them.

 

 

How to play a Supernatural

Because this race description is so broad there are endless opportunities for characters, and we can only offer the most basic things to consider to make playing here fair and to avoid the trap of power gaming. For the most part the consequences are pretty clear but here are some tips when considering how to RP your supernatural.

 

Create Your Reality

Supernaturals are creatures from different worlds and realities, and every one of them can be as unique as you wish to make it. In creating the world they came from in a back story you will give you character a rich beginning and a number of strengths as well as weakness that could come from having left it. What was it like for them there? Was it a good place, was it a dangerous place? Or was it cold and unfeeling?

 

Find A Reason For Leaving

Since they are form somewhere else and managed to find themselves here, there is usually a reason why. If you can sketch out that reason in your back story you give yourself a place to begin. Did they meet Esterwell somewhere? Did they discover a portal? Were they summoned away from their world? Do they have a special kind of magic that lets them travel? Are they looking or running from something?

 

Give themReasonable Powers

It is impossible for anyone being to be good at everything. In this way choosing one kind of power and magic will put important limitations on your character that will make other want to play and interact with you. But being able to so everything will make for an unrealistic character and puts you in danger of breaking the rule on power gaming. Just keep in mind even as a supernatural you have things that you are dependent upon, and the amount of magic you can do is limited so ask yourself when creating your character, Are they a healer? Are they dark or light? Where do their specific powers lie? In nature? In illusion?

 

Maintain the Masqurade

Hunters in this place come in many shapes and sizes and not all of them are fully aware that they could even be considered that, but every single one of them is extremely dangerous to your characters well being. That being said it is important not to give yourself away easily, and certain important not to tell everyone what you are. Make sure the people you trust with knowledge can be trusted and remember there can always be consequences if you are wrong.
